Chapter 8

Scott

Ivy appears on my doorstep with a very wet Wispa in her arms. “I found him,” she gasps, “but he’s hurt.” She’s taken her jacket off and wrapped it around the wounded animal that’s shaking in her embrace. “I think he’s been bitten. We’ll need to take him to the vet’s office. Don’t let Button see him.”

“Don’t let me see what?” a little voice calls from behind me. Ivy’s worried eyes enlarge as she locks her gaze on mine.

“Is it bad?” I ask her quietly, and she nods. I turn to my daughter then drop down to her level. She runs into my arms.

“Button,” I say, calmly, “Ivy has found Wispa, but he’s hurt. I need to take him to the vet.”

“I want to come,” she shrieks, and tries to pull from my grasp.

“No,” I tell her firmly. “You need to stay here with Ivy.” I glance around at the woman I’ve been ignoring for weeks, currently holding my daughter’s pet rabbit. “Would that be all right?” She smiles kindly in answer.

“But Dad…” Button protests, and I cut her off with a look.

“You stay here. I’ll take Wispa to the vet then I’ll be home. Go and pick a film the two of you can watch while you wait for me.” I stand and take the now limp animal from her arms. My heart plummets. Please don’t be dead. Ivy stuffs her hands into her jean’s pockets, there’s a hint of red at her wrist.

“Button,” she says, “I’m going to wash my hands then I’ll be through. You go choose a film.” My little girl hesitates. “On you go,” Ivy prompts with a smile. “I’ll only be a moment.” Button sighs audibly then turns and marches off in the direction of the living room. We both watch her go until she’s out of sight.

“There’s a lot of blood,” she whispers to me.

“Thank you for finding him,” is all I can bring myself to say. “And thank you for staying with Button.”

“Anytime,” she says softly before walking past me and into the kitchen to wash up. I grab my keys from the bowl by the door and rush out to my car. Wispa lies on the passenger seat, still wrapped in Ivy’s jacket. He’s breathing, just. His body expands and contracts slowly as I drive through the dark streets. Please survive, I beg the poor animal next to me. My little girl can’t take another loss, especially after what her mother did last week. She let her down again.

The vet’s practice is in darkness, but I know Dr Johnstone lives next door to the surgery. Quickly, I climb out the driver’s door and retrieve Wispa from his makeshift bed. The porch light flicks on as I approach the front of the house then the door swings open. An elderly woman I know well comes into view. “Scott, what’s happening?” she asks, concerned.

“It’s Button’s rabbit. He escaped, and we think he’s been attacked,” I say, hurriedly.

“Come inside,” the Doctor says, calmly. “Let’s take a look.
